Primary school, grade 1-3 (swe)

Grade 1-3

English, Spanish, French and German throughout the grades

In grade 1-3, we continue to learn English, which began in the preschool class. We work with an exciting material, but we also attach great importance to communication and presentation and let the students be responsible when we, for example, have morning assembly in English.

They will also learn some basics from our profile languages, which are French, Spanish and German. They study one of these languages per school year and are therefore well prepared for their language selection in grade 4.

In these lower grades we have cross-classroom collaborations in many subjects so that the students feel secure with each other, but also so that the older students can teach those who are younger.

We work a lot with values and to strengthen the student groups, but also because all students should feel safe as individuals. We vary our approach both practically and theoretically through, for example, outdoor mathematics, tablets, laboratory materials, games, discussions and group work.
We work from the Swedish Ministry of Education’s new directive with programming and technology once a week.

All students should feel safe and secure towards each other and therefore we practice a lot to dare standing in front of the class and school. We therefore have a Christmas show, among other things, every year where the students practice performing singing, dancing, theater, etc., in front of an audience.

Proschool class

Språkskolan’s preschool class – one of a kind!

We take advantage of the 6-year-old’s desire and curiosity to learn. Therefore, the days in the preschool class accommodate many opportunities to learn and develop the language as well as play and other social training.

Swedish

We work with reading and writing preparation material, letter practice and language games according to the Bornholm model. We practice language sounds and language building (rhymes, sentences, words, syllables and sounds).

A lot of English in a playful way

Our goal is for the children to discover a new language and to think that it is fun to learn and be able to express themselves in a new way. We sing, play, practice words, rhymes and do crafts.

Mathematics

We lay the foundation for mathematical understanding and learn the basic mathematical concepts. We practice communication, reflection and speech recognition.

Sports with play and movement

Indoor sports in the form of games and ball games where we train motor skills but also to listen and be able to adapt to the rules of the game. Outdoor sports when we e.g. try skiing, skating and “brännboll”.

Example of the schedule for the preschool class.

Values and social practice

Every week we have games and exercises to strengthen the group and give the children tools to relate to each other in a good way.

Assembly

We look at the calendar, play games and go through today’s schedule.

Theme

We learn about nature and animals, our body and our local environment.

About

The story of Språkskolan

Språkskolan i Umeå

Språkskolan’s new school building on Skärvstensgatan 6 in Umeå.

Språkskolan is an economic association run by 11 dedicated employees whose policy has always been that any surplus is reinvested in the association. Språkskolan has a unique pedagogy where the child is in focus. We currently have 6 preschool departments and a complete primary school with grades F-9 in Umeå.

Språkskolan started out as one preschool department in Umeå in 1995 under the name “Umeå nya förskola”. It started as an economic association founded by two preschool teachers with the hope of positively influencing the children’s development and with that their future.

The main reason why the preschool focused on languages was that several studies showed that children’s brains are amazing, they can learn any number of languages. Another reason was that many children graduated compulsory school without being able to read or write. Language stimulation improves the childrens memory, stimulates their learning ability and prevents difficulties with reading and writing.

“The best part is that all teachers listen to you and everyone gets the help they need. All the pupils respect each other.” – Filip, pupil

When we started in 1995 the EU entry for Sweden was new and a new market was opened for work, studies, import/export, etc. It would therefore be even more important in the future to have good language skills in several languages.

The pedagogy has evolved into something unique with language learning from the age of 1. In preschool, the youngest children work with Swedish and from the age of 2 they get to try different European languages in a playful way. In primary school, the pupils also get to try Spanish, French and German in addition to Swedish, which is the language of instruction, and English which is compulsory. In grade 4 the pupils can therefore make a conscious choice about which one of the languages they want to study during grades 4-9.

Much emphasis is placed on different learning methods, including drama, arts and crafts, movement, music and media in various forms. The idea is that both halves of the brain should be stimulated and lead to a more enjoyable and effective learning. We also practice self-confidence and communication in different ways, for example through presentations, debates and discussions in smaller groups. At the end of each semester the pupils perform a self-assembled show. Over the years, we have had performances on various scenes, including Folkets Hus, Sagateatern and Ersboda Folkets Hus.

One of our goals is to have small groups. In our preschool we have about 5 children/educator for most of the day. This makes it easier for the children to concentrate and for the educators to see and give each individual what they need. At school there are at most 24 pupils per class. Additional staffing is added when needed.

“The best part is that you get to choose languages early on and we have a great schoolyard”
– Sara, pupil

Språkskolan’s job is to give all our pupils the best start in life as possible with a lot of knowledge and a good self-esteem. In order to learn new things you must feel safe, and that means to be happy with yourself, your friends and the adults around you. The staff is our most important asset, which is why we have qualified teachers, ensuring a high quality of teaching. Our staff gets continuing professional development as part of the school’s developmentwork

With the help of our unique concept, we look at the pupil’s schooling in its entirety, the pedagogy is implemented at all stages from preschool to grade 9. We place great emphasis on individual adaptation, which means that pupils can keep working at their own pace or get extra help if needed. For example, the pupils who want greater challenges in mathematics can keep on working and advancing. This means that the level of skills in mathematics will be high. At Språkskolan the pupils have a generally high level of knowledge, as can be seen in the National Tests where we always have good results.

“We teach languages early on and we have a unique language pedagogy! We have small groups and classes, which makes it easier for both pupils and teachers. And the atmosphere in school is amazing!”
– Sandra, language teacher

In 2014 Språkskolan moved into newly built premises on Skärvstensgatan in Marielund/Olofsdal, just south of Mariehem, and finally we got our own complete kitchen to cook in! We believe that nutritious and delicious food provides healthier and happier children who have the energy to spend a whole day at school. With our own kitchen we can choose to prioritize local and organic food and we can control the origin. With food directly from our kitchen there will be less transport and thus we also help save the environment.

Our nwely-built school also provided us with a brand-new schoolyard that encourages movement and being outdoors. The new schoolyard has something for all ages, we have, among a lot of other things, a fire pit, a zip line, outdoor ping pong and a ball court which turns into an ice-skating rink during the winter months.

“The best part is our new premises, good food and that I learn a lot”
– Tilia, pupil

In recent years Språkskolan has worked extensively on various projects, including an EU project for children’s well-being and development and an internationalization project. Here we have found new partners with whom we have started an exchange. One goal is that you, as an older pupil, get to visit a partner school in Europe and also house pupils from the schools visiting us. Furthermore, school trips are organized to Norrbyskär and Munkviken in year 3 and 6.

The newly built Språkförskolan at Skärvstensgatan 8. Opened in 2016.

In 2015 the construction of a brand-new preschool started next to our elementary school, and in August 2016 we moved in. The new preschool houses six departments on two floors and is the building is well adapted to our needs.

Over the years we have developed and grown rapidly. Språkskolan has now a total of about 350 pupils in six preschool departments and one primary school (grades F-9), and over 80 employees.

Apply to preschool class (förskoleklass) and primary school, grade 1-9

Språkskolan’s queue system

Språkskolan has its own queue system, it is the same for preschool class (förskoleklass) and for primary school grade 1-9, where you can register your child at any age after it has been nationally registered and has a social security number. The application is made through the school’s website and the caregiver always gets a verification email when the application has been received (check spam mail in case you do not get an email). It is the applicant’s responsibility to keep the application up to date with the proper contact information, by using the login details that can be found in the verification email.

There are no application fees.

Children in the queue are offered a place in order of application date. The child stays in the queue until it is offered a place, the caregivers themselves reject their place in the queue or until the child graduates from grade 9. If you decline a place at Språkskolan you can apply again but you will then be placed last in line.
When a child has been offered, and accepted, a place in the preschool class (förskoleklass) you will be invited to a visitor’s day and a parent-teacher meeting during the spring semester before school starts.

When offered a place in grade 1-9, contact with the class teacher/mentor is communicated for the possibility to visit the class before making the decision to accept the place in the class or not.

If your child is not offered a place within the school year, they will be automatically moved up one grade in the queue.

The child must live in Umeå municipality in order to register with us, but exceptions may occur in certain circumstances.

We only offer a place in the preschool class the year the child turns 6, regardless of what time of year they were born.

Priority policy

Priority is given first to children who are enrolled at Språkförskolan (our preschool) one term before the start of the school year. After this, we prioritise children of siblings who attend Språkskolan. The closing date for priotiry applications is September 30th of the year before your child is due to start attending. After this, admissions are handled in the order they are submitted.

Preschool

Språkförskolan – The language preschool with 6 units

Vision

At Språkförskolan we want to help the children to develop into independent people with a good self-image, who can and dare to communicate with their fellow humans in a meaningful way.

We also want to create a solid basis for learning how to read and write, since research shows that conscious linguistic stimulation during preschool-years helps prevent developing reading and writing difficulties later in school. The children also engage in mathematics and natural science in a playful way.

Language

Every morning the children take part in a class with the different profile languages English, French, Spanish and German, where they get in touch with the different languages and the culture in the target countries. The youngest children, ages 1-2 years, have Swedish class.  Introducing new languages during preschool ages has shown positive effects on cognition and linguistic awareness. This also affects the self-confidence and the self-image in a positive way.

Communication

We think that it’s important to practice all kinds of communication and to raise your self-esteem. We focus a lot on different learning and communication methods. The whole brain is stimulated, which leads to funnier and more efficient way of learning.

Staff and children

We have a high staff-to-child ratio, no more than 5-6 children per teacher, and we work in small groups part of the day in order to pay attention to every child and help them to develop according to their own ability.

Arts and crafts

We believe in the creative child who explores his/her surroundings using all their senses and their body as a tool. Every afternoon is spent with creative activities. We work with different themesusing both images, music, dance, drama and movement.

The 5-yearold children have “mini school” four times a week where they work with mathematics, natural science, letters, reading/writing and physical education in a playful way.

We also play outside every day.

Thematic work

We work thematically in our language classes as well as in arts and craftsBy doing so, the children obtain a sense of context and meaningfulness. Each semester ends with a celebration, where the children perform a theater that incorporates different languages and means of expression.

Our own kitchen

We believe that nutritional and tasty food creates healthy and happy children who have the energy to last a whole day at preschool. All food is cooked in the school’s kitchen which gives us the opportunity to control origin and we choose to prioritize local and organic food.

New premises

In August 2016 the preschool moved to new, specially built, premises at Skärvstensgatan 8. There are 6 units in total.
